What do you do when your own life loses value and every step becomes a challenge? Ruth has lost her courage to face life. Her everyday life is dreary, she feels overlooked by her husband, she has left her role as a mother behind her and loneliness dominates her days. Every Thursday she sits at the bus stop and waits for the bus into town.
Alfons sits at the same bus stop. He is happily married, has two children – and lives with Parkinson’s disease. He also waits there every Thursday. At first, Ruth meets the friendly man with the fixed gaze and trembling hands with skepticism. But when Alfons tells her about his life with the disease, a connection slowly forms.
Alfons tells Ruth about his fight against the restrictions and his unbroken determination to enjoy life to the full. Ruth opens up to him and talks about her loneliness. Together, in small steps, they find meaning and joy in their existence again. They give each other confidence, share fears and hope – and learn that it is never too late to start a new path.
The play “Small Steps” shows in an authentic way how courage, friendship and joie de vivre can overcome even the greatest challenges. It not only draws attention to Parkinson’s disease, but also invites people to see their own lives with new eyes.
